The criminal trial of Jacob Zuma is underway in the Pietermaritzburg high court, with both Zuma and his co-accused, Thales having earlier entered pleas of Not Guilty. Zuma and Thales are accused of corruption, racketeering, and money laundering linked to the arms deal of the 1990's. We have just been hearing arguments from the defence for the removal of lead prosecutor, Advocate Billy Downer. The defense claims that Zuma's prosecution is political and Downer is biased. This matter will be dealt with on the 19th of July. The judge having made a concession to the defense to allow them to read these arguments today.
