On Nagpanchami Moon's sign is Virgo and Rahu's home sign is Virgo. Nagpanchami is considered to be the best day for the pacification of snake defects due to the expansive date, constellation and self-graceful zodiac for Rahu. Lord Ashutosh is also well placed on Panchami Tithi. Therefore, on this day, chanting of Rahu-Ketu, charity, havan is suitable under the serpent peace. There is also a law for consecration of Shiva, chanting of Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, Yagya, recitation of Shiva Sahasranama, cow donation for other Duryogs.

नागपंचमी को चंद्रमा की राशि कन्या होती है और राहु का स्वगृह कन्या राशि है। राहु के लिए प्रशस्त तिथि, नक्षत्र एवं स्वगृही राशि के कारण नागपंचमी सर्पजन्य दोषों की शांति के लिए उत्तम दिन माना जाता है। पंचमी तिथि को भगवान आशुतोष भी सुस्थानगत होते हैं। इसलिए इस दिन सर्प शांति के अंतर्गत राहु-केतु का जप, दान, हवन उपयुक्त होता है। अन्य दुर्योगों के लिए शिव का अभिषेक, महामृत्युंजय मंत्र का जप, यज्ञ, शिव सहस्रनाम का पाठ, गौ दान का भी विधान है।
