This Day in History:, John Lennon Is Shot.br December 8, 1980.br The 40-year-old former member of the br Beatles was shot and killed by br obsessed fan Mark David Chapman.br The outspoken rock icon was entering his Manhattan apartment when Chapman shot him four times at close range with a .38-caliber revolver.br Lennon was rushed to br the hospital but died en route.br He had given Chapman an autograph earlier in the day.br Chapman voluntarily br remained at the scene br of the shooting until he br was arrested by police.br Demonstrations of mourning br were held all over the world.br Deemed a borderline psychotic, Chapman pleaded br guilty to murder and remains in Attica prison.br Lennon is memorialized in a section of Central Park br known as "Strawberry Fields.
