This festival of Lohri is celebrated a day before Makar Sankranti. According to Sikhism, Lohri is a festival to congratulate newly married couples and babies. In Sindhi society too, a day before Makar Sankranti, this festival is celebrated as Lal Lohi. Lohri was earlier called Tilodi. If the literal meaning of Lohri is taken, then L means wood, O means cow and Di means Rewari. That is, Lohri is formed by combining the meanings of all three words.
