Take the Money and Run is a 1969 film written, directed by, and starring Woody Allen. The film is a mockumentary that tells the story of Virgil Starkwell, an inept bank robber. br br Using a documentary style, archive footage and interviews, the story is told of the inept and unfortunate Virgil Starkwell, who entered a life of crime at a young age. Starkwell is arrested for attempting to steal a bag of money. Sent to prison, Virgil attempts to escape using a bar of soap carved into the shape of a gun, colored with shoe polish. Unfortunately for Virgil, it is raining outside and his gun discolors and melts. Starkwell still manages to escape from prison, but only by accident: participating in a mass escape plan, Virgil is in fact the only inmate not to have been warned that the plan has been canceled. Free but unemployed, Virgil finds no way to support himself and his family. He is eventually arrested again and sent to hard labor, where he is starved and brutally punished. br Starkwell escapes again, but is caught when he tries to rob an old friend who turns out to be a cop. Virgil is sentenced to 800 years in prison, but remains optimistic that "with good behavior, he can get his sentence reduced by half." In the final scene, Starkwell is shown carving a bar of soap, asking the interviewer if it's raining outside.
