Summer tan is caused by the sun's UV rays darkening the epidermis, or top layer of skin. The human eye is unable to detect UV radiations of a specific wavelength present in sunlight. Sunburn, skin cancer (melanoma), and skin ageing can all be caused by prolonged exposure to UV rays.
