Comparison: 2022 Toyota GR86 vs 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata / Battle of the Affordable Sports Cars

The last Toyota GT86 (Scion FRS Subaru BRZ) felt underpowered and was one of the biggest criticisms of the car. This new GR86 addresses that by giving drivers a bigger and more powerful engine. It has a 2.4L flat-4 boxer engine that was developed with Subaru and this new engine produces a healthy 228 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque (170 kW & 249 Nm). The 0-100 kmh time (62 mph) is down to the 5.5 second mark. This is the engine that the Toyota 86FRS should have always had.br br 2022 doesn’t see any changes to the engine. The MX-5 is still powered by a 2.0L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder that can produce 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque (135 kW & 205 Nm). The engine is able to accelerate the car from a stop to 100 kmh in around 5.7 seconds.br br The 2022 Toyota GR86 starts at just $31,490 CAD ($27,700 USD) with the 6-speed manual transmission. This particular vehicle is the Premium GR86 which will set you back $34,490 CAD ($30,300 USD). The automatic version will cost an additional $2,400 CAD ($1,500 USD).br br The 2022 Mazda MX-5 soft-top starts at a very reasonable $33,300 CAD ($27,650 USD). But from then on, things get expensive. This GS-P trim (MX-5 Club as it's known in the US) costs $37,300 CAD ($31,150 USD) but it doesn’t feel complete without the Sport Package which will cost you an additional $4,400 CAD ($4,470 USD). When it’s all said and done, a properly equipped Mazda MX 5 GS-P with the Sport package can cost as much as $50,000 CAD with taxes & fees in. That’s a lot especially considering that a fully loaded Toyota GR86 2022 is $10,000 CAD less (taxes & fees included).br --br ➡️➡️ Detailed Toyota GR86 Review: ➡️➡️ Detailed Mazda MX-5 Review: --br Follow M.G.
