FDA Proposes Annual COVID Vaccination Plan

FDA Proposes , Annual COVID Vaccination Plan.br ABC reports that health officials in br the United States want to make COVID-19 br vaccinations more like the annual flu shot.br On January 23, the Food and Drug Administration br proposed a new vaccination effort that would allow br most adults and children to get a once-a-year COVID shot.br ABC points out that this means people in the U.S. would br no longer have to keep track of how many shots br they've received or when they last got boosted.br According to ABC, the proposal comes as over 80 of br the U.S. population has received at least one dose of the br vaccine, while just 16 have received the latest booster.br On January 26, the FDA will refer br to a panel of outside vaccine experts br to weigh the new proposal.br According to FDA scientists, many Americans now br have “sufficient preexisting immunity” because of br vaccination, infection or a combination of the two. .br Scientists at the FDA and vaccine companies suggest br that further study could be done to decide who should br receive a single shot and who requires a two-dose series.br The FDA plan also includes streamlining the process br by switching all vaccines to target the same strains, br thus eliminating the current complicated system.br The proposal also includes a similar approach to the annual br flu shot by having the agency, independent experts and br manufacturers select which strains to target annually.
