At the 2017 Stanley Cup Final, Wayne Gretzky was holding a press conference when Charles Barkley crashed it and asked him, "Who is your favorite Black athlete of all time?" The Great One had an immediate answer: Grant Fuhr. A goalie during the Edmonton Oilers' dynasty, Fuhr was a trail blazer for Black hockey players. Some of his records still stand and are among those considered the most difficult to break. Fuhr also played in the classic 1987 Canada Cup when Canada prevailed against the Soviet Union.
