Big Time Sicilian Mafia Boss Dies After ‘Irreversible Coma’.
After an agony of a few days, the boss Matteo Messina Denaro, the last Cosa Nostra massacre arrested in January after 30 years on the run, died in the L'Aquila hospital.

The 62-year-old mafia boss suffered from a serious form of colon cancer which was diagnosed while he was still wanted at the end of 2020. Messina Denaro died shortly before 2am.

The mafioso's body is now found in one of the basements of the L'Aquila hospital morgue which is no more than one hundred meters from the cell-room in which he had been hospitalized since August 8th. The L'Aquila Prosecutor's Office, in agreement with that of Palermo, has ordered the autopsy which will be performed in the L'Aquila hospital.

It was colon cancer that led the ROS Carabinieri and the Palermo Prosecutor's Office on the trail of the boss, who managed to escape justice for 30 years. After his capture, Messina Denaro underwent chemotherapy in the L'Aquila super prison where a sort of infirmary was set up next to his cell. A team of oncologists and nurses from the Abruzzo hospital constantly followed the patient who immediately appeared, however, in very serious conditions. In the 9 months of detention, the godfather of Castelvetrano underwent two surgical operations related to cancer complications. Since the last one he has never recovered, so much so that the doctors decided not to send him back to prison, but to treat him in a maximum security room in the hospital, treating him with pain therapy and then sedating him.

Before losing consciousness he met some family members and gave the surname to his daughter Lorenza Alagna, whom he had in hiding and never recognised. The girl, who had met her father for the first time in prison in April, together with one of the mafia boss's sisters and her niece Lorenza Guttadauro, who is also the boss's defender, has been at her bedside in the last few days.

On Friday, on the basis of the living will left by the boss who refused the aggressive treatment, his diet was cut off and he was declared in an irreversible coma. In recent days the health management of the ASL of L'Aquila began to organize the phases following the death of the boss and those of the return of the body to the family, represented by Lorenza Guttadauro and Lorenza Alagna. The Prosecutor's Office of L'Aquila, in agreement with that of Palermo, ordered an autopsy on the body.
