Here, water and electrolytes are absorbed, and the remaining waste material is fermented by trillions of beneficial microorganisms, known as gut flora. These microbes break down complex carbohydrates, producing short-chain fatty acids and gases like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. The muscular walls of the colon contract and relax in a wave-like motion, known as peristalsis, to propel the waste material forward. As the waste moves through the colon, it becomes more solidified and concentrated, forming feces. The feces then move into the sigmoid colon, where they are stored until they are eliminated from the body through the rectum and anus during defecation.
