Gaius Marius was a prominent Roman general and politician in the late 2nd century BCE. He is best known for his military reforms, which allowed non-property-owning citizens to join the Roman army, drastically changing the structure of the Roman military. Marius also played a key role in the Social War and the conflict with his rival, Lucius Cornelius Sulla.
