Star Trek: Section 31

Star Trek: Section 31

An action film starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh should be an easy must-see. But regrettably, this Star Trek: Discovery spinoff is a mess of a movie.br br Reprising the role of pansexual chaos gremlin Philippa Georgiou, Yeoh headlines a movie that plunges into the former Terran Emperor's tragic origins. But the story's main thrust is that Star Fleet's secretive Section 31 squad wants to recruit her for a mission that could save her new home universe from the conquering old one. Now, while there's a batch of fun characters in this story, the movie overall feels rushed. We suspect that's because Section 31 was originally intended as a series and was potentially retrofitted into a confining feature-length runtime. So, while a lot of big reveals happen, little has time to land. The result is a Star Trek movie that is wildly unwieldy, sometimes fun, but often frustrating. But it goes without saying Yeoh slays in it — literally and figuratively. —K.P.
