Why do we hiccup

iccups can be a bit annoying, can't they? They happen when your diaphragm—a muscle just below your lungs—suddenly contracts involuntarily. This contraction causes a quick intake of breath that is then suddenly stopped by the closing of your vocal cords, producing that characteristic "hic" sound.
