In this chapter from the war-time novel by the fantastically talented French writer Henri Barbusse (1873-1935), the battles of the First World War are brought to life. Unfortunately, Barbusse would later in life become a well known supporter of Joseph Stalin. But, his war time experiences were very much real, and his ability to communicate them through fiction beyond question.
