The first stone of Ayacucho Cathedral was laid in 1612. Its the oldest of 33 churches in a town so crowded with them its second name is the City of Churches. The stone buildings simple, geometric architecture hides an elaborate interior. with high vaults, strong arches and gruesome murals. Much of the structure has been rebuilt, in a region often struck by earthquakes. But the main altar is the centerpiece, crafted in baroque style and covered in gold leaf.
