During the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the United States lost significant military equipment. The attack destroyed 8 battleships (4 sunk, 4 damaged), 3 cruisers and 3 destroyers damaged or sunk, and 188 aircraft destroyed with 159 damaged. Several support ships were also hit. Despite the losses, no U.S. aircraft carriers were present and thus avoided damage.
