When Lady Augustus Farthindale, a beautiful noblewoman, is taken hostage by a group of deserters, the dashing Richard Sharpe is sent with the ransom. However, when the leader of the band turns out to be none other than his old enemy Obadiah Hakeswill, it soon transpires that Sharpe has been tricked and the ransom doubled.
