Trump Loses Appeal In $83M Carroll Defamation Case

President Trump lost his appeal of an $83 million defamation judgment in the E. Jean Carroll case, according to The Wall Street Journal. The Second Circuit said Trump engaged in years of relentless attacks on Carroll, accusing her of lying and claiming her lawsuit was politically motivated. The judges agreed the jury could conclude only a large financial penalty would deter him from further defamation. A Manhattan jury found Trump defamed Carroll by denying her 1990s assault claims, with Trump attending parts of the trial and briefly testifying. The judges rejected Trump’s claim of presidential immunity and upheld damages tied to Carroll’s lost career opportunities and steep income decline. The three-judge panel was appointed by Democratic presidents. Carroll’s lawyer welcomed the decision, while Trump’s lawyer said he plans to petition the Supreme Court to hear the case.
