Pacifism and Kremlin Propaganda. A Critical Distinction

Pacifism and Kremlin Propaganda. A Critical Distinction

A debate around the themes raised by Federico Berti's article, "Internationalist Pacifism and Kremlin Propaganda," published in recent days on Medium, in which the accusation that pacifist movements advocating for the freezing of the conflict in Ukraine are aligned with Kremlin positions is critically analyzed. The author argues that internationalist pacifism is based on anti-nationalist and anti-capitalist principles radically opposed to the Russian strategy, which instead is based on defending national interests and geopolitical claims. The text explains that internationalist pacifism is part of a revolutionary tradition aiming at the abolition of the state system and class solidarity, rejecting the legitimacy of wars between nations. In contrast, Russia defends its historical security zones using nationalist and imperialist categories, categories that the pacifist movement completely rejects. The article concludes that accusing pacifists of supporting Putin demonstrates a lack of understanding of the anti-state and anti-imperialist nature of their approach.
