Samuel de Champlain was a French explorer and cartographer who is considered the "Father of New France" for his pivotal role in establishing the colony. He founded Quebec City in 1608, the first permanent French settlement in North America, and explored much of the region, including the St. Lawrence River, the Atlantic coast, and the Great Lakes. He formed important alliances with Indigenous peoples, mapped large areas, and authored detailed accounts of his voyages.
