Uruguay: Trade union organization submits proposal to combat child poverty

The Uruguayan workers' union presented a proposal for the creation of a specific tax on the wealth of the richest one percent of the country, to be used for policies to combat child poverty. The tax targets approximately 25 thousand people with assets exceeding one million dollars. It is estimated that this surtax would raise over 22 million dollars annually, a figure equivalent to one percent of the gross domestic product. The vice president of the Central, Carolina Spilman, explained that 17 percent of the country lives below the poverty line. Spilman added that the working class knows that inequality does not correct itself, but requires political courage, redistributive mechanisms, and real public investment that reaches the poorest households.
