HR Minister urges salaries beyond RM1,700 statutory minimum

Human Resources Minister Steven Sim has urged employers not to treat the statutory minimum wage of RM1,700 as a default starting salary, noting it applies only to basic, low-skilled roles. br br Speaking at the signing of the 14th Collective Agreement (CA) between Genting Malaysia Berhad (GENM) and the Genting Malaysia Workers’ Union on Monday (Dec 1), Sim praised GENM for setting a progressive benchmark, raising the minimum starting wage to RM1,800—above the statutory minimum—and implementing a 10 salary adjustment, the highest in the union’s history. br br He also emphasised the ministry’s commitment to safeguarding worker welfare and ensuring fair, progressive wages.
