The trial begins with Aeloria, who uses a gentle, rose-scented palm and hypnotic whispers to lull Ellie into near-sleep, followed by Faelar, whose firm, calloused grip and deep, earthy humming are equally effective. Finding both techniques successful, the elves agree that the competition must continue; they seal the silence for the entire night by securing Ellie's hands and ankles with Faelar's hemp rope and placing a firm gag made of Aeloria's silk handkerchief over her mouth, ensuring the deeply sleeping, silenced human is immobilized until they return in the morning.
