Novaks Kapelle — Naked 1978 (Austria, Krautrock, Progressive, Hard Rock)

Novaks Kapelle — Naked 1978 (Austria, Krautrock, Progressive, Hard Rock)br br The band formed in 1967 in Vienna. The idea was drummer Erwin Novak. In their first decade, they released only two singles: "Hypodermic Needle Doing That Rhythm Thing" (1968) and "Not Enough Poison Smile Please" (1969). Their first EP, a live recording, was released in 1977. Following that, in 1978, they recorded their first full-length album, "Naked." A year later, they released their third and final album, the EP "Brennmaterial für die 80er Jahre," after which the band disbanded in 1980. Novaks Kapelle were one of Austria's wildest, most scandalous, and most inventive bands... As for the shocking album cover, it features, oddly enough, the members' mothers. The fact that they agreed to pose nude is simply astonishing. Naturally, the cover was immediately censored in Austria, so when the controversial album was reissued on CD in 2010, the cover was changed to a different one (an orange background with the inscription "Achtung! Novaks Kapelle Naked"). br br Novaks Kapelle were essentially the Austrian equivalent to the Stooges, infamous for their raw ("proto punk") sound, nihilistic attitude and confrontational live shows. They released two pretty great singles in the 60s. However Austria simply lacked a proper label infrastructure for rock music (pissing off the few label owners there were and the Austrian broadcasting monopolist ORF probably didn't help), so their recorded output petered out until the late 70s, when they released a live album, an EP as well as this, their only studio album.br br Unfortunately, aside from the cover art and some incredibly dated sexual references in the lyrics, there's nothing particularly transgressive about Naked. In fact, its mid tempo hard(-ish) rock sounds almost reactionary for 1978 and has very little to do with any kind of punk. Tracks:br br 01. Naked - 0:00br br 02. Money, Money - 2:49br br 03.
