Brazil: Pres. Lula da Silva aims to veto bill reducing sentences to those involved in January 2023 attempted coup

br Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva confirmed on Thursday his intention to veto the sentencing bill, known as the Dosimetry Law, recently approved by Congress. The legislation reduces penalties for those convicted of the January 8, 2023 coup attempt, a measure that could directly benefit former president Jair Bolsonaro, sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for alleged anti-democratic acts. Lula stated he would veto the bill if it reached his desk. The proposal, denounced as an amnesty for coup plotters, passed the Senate with 48 votes in favor and 25 against after being approved in the Chamber of Deputies the previous week.
