Ecuador: 16 military personnel convicted for forced disappearance of 4 boys in Las Malvinas case

One year after the disappearance and murder of four Ecuadorian minors in Guayaquil, the country’s Public Prosecutor’s Office delivered justice in the Las Malvinas case. On Monday, the Fourth Criminal Court of Guayas convicted 16 military personnel for the forced disappearance of Josué and Ismael Arroyo, Steven Medina, and Nehemías Arboleda, four Afro-descendant teenagers who vanished in December 2024. Eleven of those convicted received sentences of 34 years and eight months in prison, while five cooperating witnesses were sentenced to 30 months. Lieutenant Colonel Juan Francisco Iglesia, the seventeenth defendant, was acquitted.
