Jo Mama – Jo Mama 1970 (USA, blues country folk rock)br br Jo Mama was founded in 1970 in Los Angeles by guitarist and vocalist Danny (Kootch) Kortchmar, who had started playing psychedelic pop three years earlier in the New York band James Taylor & The Original Flying Machine. By the time their self-titled debut album was released that same year, Kootch wasn't the only one to have established himself on the local music scene. Drummer Joel O'Brien (listed here as Joel Bishop O'Brian) was also a member of James Taylor & The Original Flying Machine and The King Bees, also from New York. Keyboardist Ralph Schuckett played in the acid-psych bands Clear Light (which also featured the ubiquitous Kootch) and The Peanut Butter Conspiracy; bassist Charles Larkey was in The City with his then-wife Carol King, where none other than Danny Kortchmar played guitar and sang. Incidentally, when Jo Mama was just beginning work on its debut album, the womanizing bassist met singer Abigale Haness (aka Gayle Haness), who became a member of the band, and her husband, of course, was Charles Larkey. The band's debut album was released on Atlantic Records and produced by Peter Asher, known as half of the British pop duo Peter & Gordon and the older brother of model Jane Asher, a longtime friend of Paul McCartney.br br Tracks:br br 01.
