Desertification and informal construction: Egypt's wounds

According to the UN, 6 million hectares of arable land dissapear every year because of desertification, a loss equivalent to an estimated 42 billion dollars. In Egypt, a mere 3 of the country's surface area is fit for agriculture. Drought, higher levels of salt in the aquifer and the soil, bad farmland drainage and construction on farmlands make up 30 of the total desertification.
