Kanpur, India: Hundreds Evacuated After River Breaches Banks

Hundreds have been evacuated from their homes in Kanpur district of India's Uttar Pradesh state, after the swollen Ganga River burst its banks, flooding several villages.br br Authorities have evacuated villages on the banks of the river. River Ganga has been flowing over the danger mark, after days of incessant heavy rain.br br [Prahlad Singh, Sub-divisional District Magistrate, Kanpur]: br "After flooding the area the water-level of River Ganga is now constant. It is 113.120 point, and it has not risen since yesterday. But the waterlogging that has taken place in the village is causing trouble in the area. Wherever the water has accumulated in earthen huts, people are being shifted to safer places at higher altitude. We are shifting the children and their cattle as well and arranging for their food and shelter."br br Massive flooding in recent months has disturbed normal life in the region. br br [Ram Ji, Boat Owner]: br "People are still being taken out. I have ferried about 500 people. There are more people coming in search of their relatives. They are seeing who has drowned and who survived." br br Lack of proper infrastructure in most areas outside Kanpur makes arable land and residential areas bordering the river vulnerable to water damage in times of heavy rains. This in turn hurts harvests and worsens food shortages.
