Heavy rains over the weekend flood parts of southeast Queensland, Australia, cutting off roads and leaving houses without power. More rain is expected in the region later this week.

On Monday, State Emergency Services remained on high alert across southeast Queensland following a weekend of intense rain.

Thousands of homes were left without power across the state capital Brisbane and roads were flooded with overflowing creeks.

"We have been here for two years, it's flooded like this twice, so far this is the third time now, it's like I'm ready to build an ark now. It was a little bit flooded last night, now it is like a foot of water around the whole house, from front to the back."

Local media reported record rainfall in about six places in southeast Queensland in October.

"We have had 125 millimeters overnight, that is almost five inches, so it's really high intensity rains."

Dozens of roads had been cut off and schools were closed in some parts of the region.

The rain is expected to ease later Monday, but more rains are expected in the region later this week.
