Vlog 20 - Brandi Carlile | Cake | Regina Spektor | Roxy ...

The beguiling Brandi Carlile actually performed on Austin City Limits back in March of 2010 but the set was only broadcast this past November – and we're at a total loss to explain how the ACL programmers were able to sit on a performance this good for more than half a year. Check out our selections from "Pride and Joy", "Oh Dear" and the wonderful "The Story", and then head to iTunes to buy her music if you don't already own it. Stevie Wonder did some on-th-fly composing when he appeared on Larry King Live last week. We doubt that it will go down as one of the great works of his catalogue, but its amusing nonetheless. And speaking of amusing, Cake injected some of their droll humour into an appearance on Conan on December 1st, playing the first single "Sick of You" from their new disc "Showroom Compassion" which comes out in January. Fans of Regina Spektor have had a lot to cheer about over the past few weeks. First came a terrific performance of "Dance Anthem of the 80s" on Jimmy Fallon, where she teamed up, with very good effect, with the Roots. Last month also saw the release of Regina's first official live recording a CD-DVD package called "Live from London" that was recorded at the Hammersmith Apollo in December 2009. We sample a couple of our favourite tracks, including "Hotel Song" and "Fidelity". Bryan Ferry's "Olympia" album was supposed to have been released under the Roxy Music moniker, featuring, as it did, contributions from his 70s bandmates. Somewhere along the way it turned into a Bryan solo record, but Roxy Music is nonetheless regrouping once again in 2011 for their 40th anniversary 'For Your Pleasure" tour, which will start out in the UK early in the new year. We have a look at a couple of Roxy's summer 2010 appearances to see how the lads are looking and sounding - "Ladytron" from the Fuji Rock Festival, and their show-closing performance of "Love is the Drug" on the last-ever episode Friday Night with Jonathan Ross in July. Finally, the news that Pulp would be reforming next year ...
