Damon is just a man when it comes to Elena, he has feelings and can get hurt. He needs a hero to save him, and Elena seems to be that hero always saving him no matter how much they fight, she's always there for him. All of this makes Damon a better person, and he finds a hero within himself who fights for a good cause and does everything he can to keep Elena alive.
