South Koreans hold anti-North rallies on the anniversary of the sinking of a South Korean navy vessel. The vessel sank last March, after a torpedo attack from the North... killing 46 sailors.

South Koreans held anti-North Korea rallies in Seoul on Friday, marking the first anniversary of the sinking of a South Korean warship that killed 46 sailors.

The Cheonan warship sank on March 26th last year after a North Korean torpedo attack, which the reclusive country denies.

Protesters burned North Korean flags and portraits of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and his son and heir apparent Kim Jong-un.

[Koo Jai-tai, President, National Police Veterans Assoc.]:
"The naval ship was completely destroyed and 46 sailors were killed. We are holding a rally here to mourn the victims, and to make a firm decision to be prepared against further provocation (from the North).”

Before the rally started, Seoul citizens paid homage at an altar to the victims of the Cheonan incident.

And in another rally in Seoul, South Korea's conservative protesters along with North Korean defectors, denounced North Korea's provocations.

[Choi Sung-ryong, Protest Leader]:
"We are holding this event today to increase our people's awareness of the North's threats and to enlighten our people to patriotism.”

Tensions between the two Koreas have been running high for a couple of years. They’ve been fueled by a number of deadly attacks blamed on the North and the South's decision to sever economic links… an attempt to force Pyongyang to end its controversial nuclear program.
