Some flights in India are grounded today... after members of a pilot association went on strike.

Pilots working with the national carrier Air India went on strike in New Delhi and Mumbai on Wednesday.

The strike began after talks with management over pay parity ended in a deadlock.

Nearly 800 pilots of the Indian Commercial Pilots Association went on strike, leading to the cancellation of flights, and leaving passengers stranded at airports.

According to media reports, around eight flights from New Delhi and 11 from Mumbai have been cancelled while several others are delayed.

[Dilshad Kumar, New Delhi Resident]:
"We are facing a lot of problems. We have come to drop our friend but we cannot find any official who can provide us with information or details. Instead of going by flying, we feel it would have been better to take a bus."

The Air India pilots were formerly employed with the Indian Airlines prior to its merger with Air India in 2007.

The association has long been demanding wage increase for pilots and raised issues concerning work conditions.

Air India management has de-recognized the association and declared their strike illegal, since a seven-day notice was not given.
