The eruptive activity of Mt. Etna sharply increased last night. The pyrotechnics peaked early Thursday (from 2:00 to 6:00 local time), when the Sicilian giant, Europe's tallest active volcano, spewed out fountains of lava and spat shards of incandescent magma more than 400 metres into the air amid ear-popping explosions.
