South Korean marines are staging a large-scale military operation, along with the army and air force. It's an effort to strengthen joint operational capabilities. The drill continues through Friday.

South Korea carried out a large-scale military operation at the harbor city of Pohang on Thursday with the marines, army and air force. This is the first full-scale regiment drill since North Korea's deadly shelling on a South Korean island last year.

The exercise, aimed at strengthening joint operational capabilities, began with armored vehicles from warships approaching the beachhead while firing smoke bombs.

[LMaj. Oh Deok-soon, Marine]:
"With this amphibious landing operation, we have enhanced our joint operational capabilities of army, navy and air force to another level. The amphibious landing operation itself is a joint operation, so we're demonstrating this as an actual training to make it a model for our joint operations."

As the vehicles landed on the seashore, combat helicopters approached from above, while the marines came out from the vehicles and aimed their mortars at simulated enemies.

15 navy warships, nine combat and scout helicopters and 21 armored vehicles were mobilized for the operation. Over 2,000 marines participated.

[LCpl. Koo Joon-young, Marine]:
"As a marine combatant armed with strong spirit and combat strength, I will never fail to defeat any provocations from enemies."

The military exercise started on Monday and ends on Friday.
