Earlier this week we reported that Chinese basketball star Yao Ming is retiring. Now, Yao Ming is looking back on his eight season career, talking about what he'll miss the most about playing pro.

Chinese basketball icon Yao Ming announced his retirement from the NBA on Wednesday in Shanghai. He's been playing at the Houston Rockets for the past eight seasons. Yao spoke about his career as well as future plans.

[Yao Ming, Retiring from the NBA]:
"I survived it. That's what I'm proud of. The NBA is the highest level in the basketball area in the world. Everyone dreams to be part of it and to compete with the best players in the world and to show people what you are capable can do. I was very fortunate to have that opportunity and have some success in there."

Yao first came to the NBA in 2002 when the Houston Rockets drafted him.

Unfortunately numerous injuries—broken bones in his left leg, surgery on his left big toe, a right knee injury and ankle injuries—left him sidelined, so he only played five games in the final two seasons.

Yao admits he will miss the adrenaline of the NBA.

[Yao Ming, Retiring from the NBA]:
"I miss the full speed running and sprinting on the court. That feeling, you know. Well of course I will still play some of the game but not on a professional court anymore. Maybe I will play some of the game against my kids."

Yao will be in charge of the Shanghai Sharks, a Chinese Basketball league team he now owns. The star says he will divide his time between Houston, Beijing and Shanghai, his hometown.
