Floods tighten grip on Bangkok

Water levels along Bangkok's Chao Phraya river are rising as record high tides meet the run-off from floods in the north.br The river's burst its banks in some suburbs like Bang Phlad which were already underwater and now in even deeper misery.br Many here have already fled their homes.br Those who stayed, like 73-year-old Ten who's keeping an eye on his family's belongings, say they're running short of essential basics.br SOUNDBITE: Ten Kaewkaen, resident of Bang Phlad, saying (Thai):br "People are hoarding food. There's no food left. I tried to get some from the market but there are no supplies."br Relief workers are finding it increasingly hard to reach those in flooded areas like this.br The head of Yanhee hospital says they're doing what they can.br SOUNDBITE: Dr Supot Sumritvanitcha, chief executive officer of Yanhee Hospital, saying (English):br "The hospital has to take care of all the Bang Phlad people here and they just call in, we send truck, we send boat to get them out, otherwise they will die at home."br On Friday residents in more areas of the Thai capital were warned to leave.br Some traders were still trying to carry on but even they had to admit it's far from business as usual in water this deep.br Thailand's prime minister says she's considering a plan to dig channels into some roads in the east of the city to drain water into the sea.br The defence ministry has 50, 000 armed personnel standing by with boats and vehicles to help evacuate more people.br Bangkok's traffic department says it's been unable to keep track of the scale of the exodus by road from the city because its monitoring equipment is under water.
