There is a bit of a general assumption that spread betting is only for short term traders and I don't really think that's really the case. From my own perspective I've held a long gold position as a spread bet for about 4 years. You pay rollover costs, but you gain the benefit of leverage and of course any gains are free from capital gains tax.
