Efforts to Recover Japanese Tourism: Facts and Opinion

Travel agencies abroad came to Tokyo to share their opinion on the recent effort by the Japanese government to encourage travelers to come to Japan. Here's more from our reporter Liliana Yap. br br Eight months have passed since the Tohoku earthquake in Japan. Since then tourism to Japan has plummeted, and the country is struggling to bring in foreign tourists. br br The Visit Japan Travel Mart exhibition, hosted by the Japan Tourism Agency, aims to encourage agencies abroad to come to Tokyo and see the real situation. br br [Hideo Oniki, Deputy Director, Japan Tourism Agency]: br "Since July, we've invited around 1,000 people to let them see the actual situation and safety in Japan." br br Rosaline Lam represents a travel agency in Hong Kong. br br [Rosaline Lam, Manager, Sunflower Travel]: br "In the first few months, just like June, July, August, we promote a very cheap price, it's supported by airlines, and hotels in Japan. So we are very successful, I think. But on October, November, the poorest area is Tokyo. Because many many bad news, no good news, only bad news you can hear. So I think Japanese government has to do something about that." br br Jason Murray from California says the difficult part is getting correct first-hand information. br br [Jason Murray, President, Pacific Reach]: br "They've been mixed, they've been very mixed, sometimes it is difficult to get information, to get the right information quickly. Especially in the U.S., we don't have a lot of access, especially regarding the accident in Fukushima." br br Murray says it's encouraging to see the positive attitude of Japanese people.
