Portugal 'robbing civil servants'

Portugal's public service workers are angry and on the march.br They're outraged by next year's budget which suspends holiday and year-end bonuses for civil servants and will push up taxes.br SOUNDBITE: Mario Nogueira, head of FENPROF teachers' union, saying (Portuguese):br "First of all we are against the way civil servants in the public administration are being attacked in Porgual, against the daily robberies perpetrated on workers on a daily basis, taking their salaries, bonuses and working conditions and even their future prospects. This protest is one of many that will happen in 2012."br The protesters descended on the finance ministry carrying a coffin with photos of the ruling coalition leaders inside.br The government is unlikely to change course now.br Portugal is the third euro zone country to seek a bailout after Greece and Ireland.br It's trying to slash its budget deficit from nearly 10 per cent last year to just under six per cent to tackle its debt problems.
