PLEASE NOTE: EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIALbr Veteran Marxist militant Carlos the Jackal has been given a second life prison sentence by a French court.br Carlos, real name Illich Ramirez Sanchez, has been convicted by a special court in Paris over a series of bombings in the 1980s.br French prosecutors say justice has been a long time coming.br SOUNDBITE: Jacques Miquel, civil prosecutor, saying (French):br "I said at the start of the trial he was a professional killer. I also said that he was a mercenary, sanctioned by certain states. The victims have waited a very long time for this trial but today they are satisfied that justice has been done."br The new life sentence has been been handed down for four attacks including this one in Paris in 1982.br The bombings claimed 11 lives and wounded 200 other people.br Ramirez had denied any specific involvement.br His defence lawyer is accusing the court of bowing to public pressure.br SOUNDBITE: Francis Vuillemin, defence lawyer for Carlos the Jackal, saying (French):br "The French judges didn't have the courage to bring down this house of cards which is what the accusations were, accusations which asked to be knocked down, because to acquit Carlos would have been a scandal for public opinion."br The 62-year-old, once the world's most wanted man, is already serving life for killing two policemen and an informant in 1975.br He would have been eligible for parole next year.
