According to recent polls, 49 of California voters favor a ballot measure that could legalize possession of up to 1 ounce of marijuana. Backers say Prop 19 could generate up to US$1.4 billion in annual tax receipts for local governments and generate US$300 million annual law enforcement savings. But opponents worry the increased availability of marijuana will lead to higher use among minors. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently decriminalized possession of up to 1 ounce and says Prop 19 is unnecessary.
