In the brief incursion launched by the army into southern Gaza, troops encountered fierce resistance from Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists. Eleven Palestinians were killed, all but two were armed.Troops uncovered an explosives belt and bomb that were apparantly prepared by terrorists for an attack in Israel.
