PLEASE NOTE: EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIALbr br California's appeals court has overturned the state's ban on same-sex marriage in a victory for gay rights campaigners.br br The 2-1 decision ruled the Proposition 8 ban was unconstitutional, but not whether marriage was a fundamental right for same-sex couples.br br Campaigners behind the latest appeal say it's nonetheless a milestone.br br SOUNDBITE: Sandy Stier, co-plaintiff, saying (English):br br "Today our court sends a powerful message to us and our children and our children's children and that is that we all deserve the same rights and we all matter."br br In the gay bastion of West Hollywood too the court's decision got a warm welcome.br br SOUNDBITE: Lisa Donohoe saying (English):br br "We originally had wedding plans. We put them on hold after Proposition 8 passed. We're excited to get started on those again as soon as possible."br br SOUNDBITE: Shawn Mimbs saying (English):br br "It hasn't affected me just yet but certainly, hopefully, in the future it will."br br California's Supreme Court legalised gay marriage in 2008, only for voters to back a constitutional amendment six months later defining marriage as between a man and a woman.br br And the fight's not over yet.br br Supporters of the ban say they'll appeal, a move likely to keep gay marriage in California on hold for a possible showdown again in the Supreme Court.
