Ex-East German activist tipped for presidency

A former East German rights campaigner has emerged as the favourite to succeed Christian Wulff as German president. A newspaper poll says Joachim Gauck has the backing of 54 percent of Germans, although he has not put himself forward yet. Wulff is stepping down over a financial favours scandal. Chancellor Angela Merkell had previously opposed Gauck's candidacy.
