A lit flare that threatened to cause an explosion at a North Sea platform leaking flammable gas has gone out, a spokesman for the French oil giant said on Saturday. The company is preparing to sink two relief wells to stop the gas leak at the platform, where concerns first emerged a month ago, in parallel with a plugging operation. The accident has been described by Total as its worst problem in the North Sea in a decade.
