New Malawi president sacks police chief

Human rights groups have praised a decision by Malawi's new president to sack the chief of police, Peter Mukhito, whose officers killed 19 people in anti-government riots last year.br br Joyce Banda was sworn in on Saturday after the previous President Bingu wa Mutharika, who she had opposed, died of a heart attack.br br The police were accused of repressing dissent under her predecessor.
