br Chiranuch Premchaiporn, human rights defender and editor of the news platform Prachatai, is one of many independent voices who have fallen victim to tighter restrictions and internet censorship in Thailand. Chiranuch is accused of crimes under lèse majesté, for not deleting comments on her news site quickly enough that were deemed derogatory towards the Royal Family. After a lengthy process, the verdict is expected on 30th April, 2012. If convicted she could face up to 20 years in Thai jail.br br After the coup in 2006 Thailand has experienced periods of serious political turmoil. The 2011 elections seem to have stabilized the situation temporarily, but the Thai authorities continue to crack down on social activism, in particular censoring activists on the Internet.br br On April 17, Chiranuch visited Civil Rights Defenders for a seminar, part of their seminar series, 'One Hour of Human Rights'.
